Once you've found that perfect apartment, stand out from the crowd of applicants by making a good first impression.
When you call to book a showing, speak clearly and be direct. Take the first available appointment you can and make a good impression by being early and introducing yourself to the property manager. Be polite and ask questions about the property and suite. Treat the meeting like a job interview and present yourself accordingly.
If you like the apartment, let the property manager know you are interested. Ask to fill out an application if one isn't readily available. If given a paper copy, don't hesitate to fill it out on the spot. Print clearly and fill in all questions honestly. Be upfront if there have been any issues with your current landlord.
Rental applications are thorough. Be prepared to provide the following information:
- Driver's license number
- Full names for all who plan to live with you
- Current address and landlord contact information
- Reason for leaving current rental
- All previous addresses you've lived at in the past 2 years
- Employer's name and phone number
- Supervisor's name and phone number/extension number
- Length of employment
- Banking information
- Additional income
- Emergency contact information
- Vehicle make, model, and license plate number
- Information on your pets
Clearly fill in all of the information required so there will be no doubt or questions about your application.
Generally, landlords need personal and credit references. Provide at least two personal references, which can be from a co-worker, friend, or current neighbour.
If the building is pet friendly, help your application stand out by providing pet references as well. References can be from a vet to show your pet has received proper care, or neighbours where you currently live.
