Here's 8 tips to help you turn down the heat in your apartment, without using A/C!

Tip #1: Keep the shades closed during the day

If you're not at home during the day, draw your shades. Keeping direct sunlight out of your space is the easiest way to keep the temperature from hitting those uncomfortable levels both during the day and in the evening. If you are home during the day, keep the shades drawn and ditch those incandescent lightbulbs- LED bulbs don't heat up as much and don't use as much energy.

Tip #2: Open your window at night

The temperature and humidity drops at night. Use this to your advantage by opening your windows to cool down your space.

Tip #3: Make meals that don't require the use of the oven or stovetop

When it's already hot and humid outside, you don't want to create more heat inside! There are many summer meals that are light and refreshing and can be made without the use of heat. Or, when in doubt, get take-out!

Tip #4: Cotton, cotton, cotton!

Loose, cotton clothing breathes well and will wick away your sweat. Cotton sheets will do the same.

Quick tip: Pop your pillowcases in the freezer shortly before bed, for an instant cool-down.

Tip #5: Reverse your ceiling fan

Most modern ceiling fans come with the option to reverse the direction of the blades. In the winter, the clockwise motion helps to keep the heat lower. In the summer, change the direction to counter-clockwise to keep the cool air circulating.

Tip #6: Hang a damp sheet in front of an open window

Dampen a light sheet and hang it in front of an open window on a breezy day. The air moving through the sheet will create a quick, cool breeze.

Tip #7: Invest in a fan

Place a fan across the room from a window to create a cross-breeze. You can do the same with setting up multiple fans in a space.

Quick tip: Place a bowl of ice cubes or a shallow pan of cold water directly in front of the fan to create a cool stream of air.

Tip #8: Still can't cool down? Apply a cold compress to your wrists.

Any of your pulse points will do: neck, temples, back of knees, inner thighs, inside of elbow, ankles & tops of feet.
